Dear Kushal, I am new to Linux on USB Flash and plan to install Fedora 9 on my recently purchased Transcend Jet Flash 8 GB USB. I have a PC which runs WIN_XP_SP2. Do I have to download i86_Live CD version of Fedora 9, burn it and keep it handy to proceed with USB Flash installation? Please advice. Thank you.

Thanks KD for your help. I have a few more questions.

Do I need a Fedora machine to create a Live USB key? I learn from other posting for earlier version (ver 8) of Fedora that you need a Fedora machine to create a Live Fedora USB.

Yesterday, I tried to use the windows installer using 'liveusb-creator-2.2.zip'. The USB key was 4GB and formatted with FAT32. The installation was run from a windows XP machine and I gave the USB as the destination disk. The installation started well but later got stuck at 84% for a few hours. Then I looked at the contents of the USB it was still completely empty.

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong here...

Best regards,
Vimal

Yes, you are correct. Just install Fedora into the USB key and whenever you need just do the restart with the USB key to boot, you will get Fedora up and running in your system :)
If you have any more doubts feel free to ask :)

Hi,

I am new Fedora and creating Live USB keys. As I understand, I can install the Fedora o/s on the USB key and use it as my primary o/s.

Now, I have a standard windows XP PC at the moment where I do most of my work. Can I swap between XP and Fedora with just a restart and plugging in/out USB (with Fedorra) without damaging my XP o/s.

Thanks

Regards,
Vimal

Diabolic,

I have created USB sticks (1GB & 2GB) by formatting it to FAT16, so, I can use it on both GNU/Linux and Windoz as well. Hope this method also support for the same.

I took an USB Hard drive (80GB) from India (last January) and partitioned it and make one partition as a boot partition with FAT 16. I had a customized Fedora 8 Spin of 1.2GB. Finally able to make a Live Boot USB HDD. ;)

Chalo bye!!
